Karinto is a traditional Japanese snack that consists of crunchy deep-fried dough coated in a hard brown sugar caramel. These karinto from North Colors are extra special, as they use domestic Japanese ingredients from the best possible sources.
Sourcing natural ingredients from Hokkaido in the far north, to Okinawa in the far south, this is a marriage of flavors that would have been impossible to achieve not too long ago.
Hokkaido's wide open plains and cool climate are ideal for growing wheat, and Hokkaido's flour is one of the best bread flours in the world. Conversely, Okinawa's tropical climate is ideal for growing sugar cane, and traditionally, brown sugar has been one of Okinawa's largest exports.
Using Hokkaido flour and beet sugar in the dough, and Okinawan brown sugar for the coating was part of North Colors' committment to using only domestic ingredients.
The slight bitterness from the caramel, richness from the dough, and overall sweetness as you crunch through these delicious karinto will ensure this becomes your new favorite snack!
