Tamaruya was founded in Shizuoka, Japan in the 1890s as a vendor who sold wasabi picked from an eight-wheeled cart. Eventually, they began selling pre-packaged wasabi pickles to travelers through the windows of the Tokaido Main Line train that passed through Shizuoka City.

They quickly became known as a specialty souvenir from Shizuoka. Now, they’re dedicated to developing unique products harnessing the flavor of wasabi, and using it in modern ways. For example, their popular wasabi salt combines powdered Shizuoka wasabi with domestic salt and kombu kelp, to create a spicy umami seasoning that enhances the flavors of sashimi, tempura and more.
